Come meet Manos del Uruguay: it’s beautiful and Free Trade–certified

Manos del Uruguay is here! This wonderful hand-dyed yarn will make you forget every other South American yarn. And best of all, it’s Fair Trade-certified by the World Fair Trade Organization. The Manos Cooperatives were founded in 1968 by five women who wanted to develop economic opportunities for women in a country where such opportunities were–and still are–quite scarce. The enterprise has grown to encompass 17 individual cooperatives employing 350 artisans. The cooperatives provide health insurance, retirement pensions, paid vacations and paid maternity leave for their members. Cooperative members also enjoy enhanced educational opportunities; the first kindergartens in Uruguay were founded by Manos Cooperatives.
